What is web and digital accessibility?

Web and digital accessibility is a way to let people with differing needs, preferences and in different situations, navigate the web and engage with content effectively and easily. People with disabilities should be able to perceive, understand, navigate, and interact with websites and tools, so they can contribute equally without barriers.

People who may benefit from accessibility this include those with visual, auditory, physical and cognitive disabilities, people experiencing temporary and situational disability, and those with changing access needs due to factors like aging.

Online content should be adaptable to different user needs and the assistive technologies used by people with disabilities, such as screen readers, screen magnifiers, text to speech and voice recognition applications.

The University of Sydney is committed to making its web content accessible to all users. Our Disability Action Plan requires University sites to be developed in conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 to Level AA.

Canvas and accessibility

The move to Canvas as the single institution-wide learning management system provides an opportunity to adopt best practice in the design of unit sites and the resources they contain, such as handouts and videos.
