Preparing for job interviews

Purpose

Generative AI can be an effective tool for job interview preparation. You can use AI to help you understand what companies are looking for in their interviews, anticipate interview questions that might be asked, and give examples of how best to answer interview questions. AI can also simulate a mock interview which gives you the opportunity to practice and refine your responses, provide feedback on your answers, and improve your confidence when addressing common interview questions.

Prompt

Note: The following prompts were tested with Microsoft Copilot for Web, but they are suitable for most language based generative AI tools.

What specific skills and experience should I highlight in an interview for <job title> in <secific industry>?
What are the 10 most common questions companies ask when interviewing <job title> in Australia?
Act as a hiring manager at <company> in the <specific> industry. What questions would you be looking to ask a candidate interviewing for the role of <job title>?

Follow up prompts

What are some ways I could answer that question to demonstrate my interest and capability?

Advice

You might also want to copy and paste the job description provided by the company/organisation into the AI tool, allowing the AI to have as much information as possible in order to better generate interview questions and advice tailored to the role you are interviewing for.

Explanation

Since it has been trained on a diverse range of text, including job interview content, generative AI tools can generate questions based on specific job roles or industries. This can help you anticipate the types of questions that might be asked for a specific job role or in a particular sector.

By providing the AI with the role you are interviewing for, the company/organisation and industry, and asking the AI to fulfil a role (e.g. 'Act as a hiring manager', 'Act as an experienced software engineer on the hiring committee of <company>') and giving them instructions ('generate common interview questions'), this allows the AI to tailor its advice.
